In the post-pandemic world, the landscape of education has transformed significantly, revealing a host of challenges for students across all grade levels. Whether your child is in elementary school, middle school, or preparing for the rigors of high school, tutoring has become an essential tool to bridge the gaps that have emerged in recent years. At Great Expectations College Prep, we offer tailored support for students of all ages and academic needs, ensuring that each child receives the personalized attention necessary to excel.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on elementary school children was profound. The years of disrupted learning, characterized by brief Zoom sessions and isolated study, left many young learners struggling to catch up. This is particularly concerning for children who missed out on the “critical period” of learning, typically between the ages of 5 and 7, when foundational skills such as reading, writing, and linguistic development are most effectively acquired. Without consistent, guided practice during this crucial time, many children now face difficulties that manifest as attention deficits or learning challenges, often mistaken for conditions like ADHD.

Research supports these observations. A study from Stanford Graduate School of Education found that reading fluency among first through fourth graders stagnated during the school closures of 2020 and has yet to recover; this gap in foundational skills is alarming, especially given that reading fluency is a key predictor of academic success in later years. The New York Times also reported a significant increase in the number of children missing reading benchmarks, a direct consequence of the interrupted education these young students experienced.

Given these challenges, parents might wonder if their young child is too young to benefit from tutoring. Based on our experience, the answer is a resounding no. Early intervention through one-on-one tutoring can be incredibly beneficial for children who are struggling to keep up due to the COVID learning curve. Our tutors, many of whom specialize in elementary and middle school education, are equipped to provide the structured, focused attention that these students need. By engaging with a tutor early on, children can rebuild their confidence, strengthen their foundational skills, and develop the discipline necessary to thrive in a more traditional classroom setting.

But our services are not limited to younger students. For middle schoolers and high schoolers, tutoring is equally vital. Whether your child is looking to strengthen fundamental skills in subjects like reading comprehension, grammar, or math, or needs support in a specific area where they are struggling, we can help. Our tutors are experts in their fields, many holding advanced degrees, and they bring a wealth of experience to their sessions. They are adept at presenting challenging concepts in multiple ways, ensuring that each student can grasp the material and excel.

In addition to subject-specific tutoring, we also offer support in study skills, which is crucial for high-achieving students who may be unknowingly frustrated by weaknesses in underlying learning skills like focus, working memory, or processing speed. Our comprehensive study skills curriculum includes modules on time management, executive functioning, and the development of effective study habits. Our specialized tutors can help identify these issues and develop strategies to overcome them, ensuring that your child can perform at their best.

Even students who are not struggling can benefit from tutoring. Working with an experienced instructor can help students solidify concepts, push them to think beyond the classroom, and enhance their overall performance. Tutors provide an invaluable resource, offering support and guidance that helps students achieve their full potential.

At Great Expectations College Prep, we believe that every student deserves the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their age, academic level, or prior learning experience. Whether your child is just starting their educational journey or is preparing for the challenges of high school and beyond, our team of dedicated professionals is here to support them every step of the way. Don’t wait until it’s too late—solidify your child’s academic foundation today and set them on the path to success.

How To Tackle the Personal Statement

Essays
Personal statements offer the best opportunity to humanize yourself to the admissions officers, so it’s vital to take advantage of them. Readers already know your statistics and have seen your list of extracurricular activities, so the essay is not a chance to brag about something you’ve done or accomplished; it is a chance to give colleges a glimpse of who you really are—not as a student, but as a person.
Innovation or Inconvenience? Reflecting on Year One with the Digital SAT

Test Prep
Here at Great Expectations College Prep, we’ve closely followed the rollout of College Board’s digital SAT ever since its announcement in 2022. With a full year of the test finally behind us—the last National testing date of 2024 was December 7th—it’s an opportune moment to assess the exam’s impact and consider how to prepare for 2025 and beyond. While the test’s advertised advantages—shorter duration, fewer questions, shorter reading passages, standalone verbal questions, increased time per question, the integration of the Desmos graphing calculator across the math section, etc.—have made it attractive to test takers, critical questions remain: how does this new version measure up to its predecessors, and have these changes truly benefited students?
