Yoona began her tutoring experience as an undergraduate student at UCLA where she studied English Literature, German, and Creative Writing. While there, she volunteered as a peer tutor, helping fellow students raise their grades and prepare for exams. After graduating, she continued her work as an academic and test prep tutor throughout Southern California.
She taught and tutored writing/composition at Santa Monica College, where she worked with a wide range of students from different backgrounds and at different ability levels, gaining valuable experience and insights. She was also the head editor of a small publishing company, has written and edited professionally for several companies, and probably knows way too much about grammar. As a humanities person herself, she has a unique ability to teach math to those for whom it doesn't come naturally, making an intimidating subject both logical and approachable.
Drawing on her 15+ years of experience, Yoona uses her talent in tailoring instruction to individual students to help them gain confidence in their abilities and motivate them to do their best. She has a great track record of success, helping her motivate students to make impressive jumps in test scores and grades!
- Yoona won a Fellowship to study at The Huntington Library Special Collections in conjunction with UCLA and was one of a lucky few to view an original copy of a Shakespeare first folio up close and in person.
- She won a Fellowship with LACMA and was part of the curation team that assisted the curator in bringing an entire ancient Islamic mosaic archway, intact, to the museum for the first time.
- She wrote, directed, and performed in an adaptation of Heiner Müller's "Die Hamletmaschine" (in German), along with a friend/co-director.
- Yoona gave the band Kara’s Flowers (which later changed their name to Maroon 5) one of their first ever live “gigs” at a small coffeehouse on the UCLA campus when they were just starting out.
- She wrote art and culture reviews for The Daily Bruin (UCLA’s school newspaper).
